Shizuko Hall's Commitment
For me, painting is a form of prayer and a way of breathing. It is also an act of seeking connection with others.
Using a variety of media—oil, watercolor, pastel, mineral pigments, and more—I capture on canvas the small, trivial scenes of everyday life that repeat themselves.
Light and wind merge and resonate, weaving a faint tremor that can only be sensed by the softest parts of the heart.
That world is my own source of healing, and at the same time, a message to others.
“I am here. And I am connected to your life.”
A painting only gains meaning when it leaves my hands and becomes a part of someone’s daily life.
What I can do may not amount to concrete salvation, but I am always here, in this place, continuing to paint the wind, the light, and your place in the world.
Praying that tomorrow will be filled with light. May my work quietly stay by your side and become a warm, gentle light of healing.
I create works that capture the small joys that color our lives—beautiful landscapes, daily routines, flowers adorning a table, and endearing presences—and weave them into stories. With the theme of living alongside art, I hope to be a presence that heals the viewer’s heart, offers comfort at times, and gently encourages them.
Exhibited Works

Into the Blue
Size: F4 (24.2 × 33.3 cm)
¥110,000 (tax included)
Oil on canvas
Nice, Southern France
In France, cafés play a vital role as “third places.”
Drawing inspiration from the tricolor—symbolizing liberty, equality, and fraternity—I depicted people relaxing as they gather at a café.

Rainy Day
Size: F6 (31.8 × 41 cm)
¥165,000 (tax included)
Oil on canvas
Staying home on a rainy day. I wonder what they’re looking at through the rain-streaked window.
I’ve layered various shades of green and blue with different saturation levels. I applied a thin layer of crystal powder to the canvas to evoke the appearance of fogged-up glass.

Something Cheerful
Size: F6 (31.8 × 41 cm)
¥165,000 (tax included)
Oil on canvas
Sarlat, Southwest France
Whenever I travel, I always make sure to stop by the local market. It’s full of energy, and everyone seems to be having a good time. It’s a place where I can recharge my spirits.
A market in a town that still retains its medieval streetscape. I wanted to capture the rustic charm you don’t find in cities, so I used colors based on natural earth tones.

The Shining Season
Size: F6 (41 × 31.8 cm)
¥165,000 (tax included)
Oil on canvas
Eastern France: Champagne
Essois is where Renoir spent his final years. It is a tranquil rural town through which the Ource River flows. In the woods behind Champ-de-Dotte, I discovered a sparkling stretch of water all to myself.
This painting is based on a sketch I created on-site, while sensing the presence of dancing sylphs. I carefully adjusted the application of the ground layer—a mixture of gofun and crystal powder—to create a contrast between the lush foliage of the trees and the shimmering, smooth surface of the water.

Magic by the Window
Size: F4 (24.2 × 33.3 cm)
¥66,000 (tax included)
Mixed media (watercolor and pastel)
Roses are symbols of love and healing. I used transparent watercolors to capture the bright, refreshing atmosphere and shadows of early summer.
I used pastels to depict the scent wafting through the air—a scent said to relieve stress and bring a positive outlook. The buds swell, bloom, and shed their petals. I used quick brushstrokes and the force of rubbing the pastels to capture the ever-changing expressions of the flowers, even as I painted.

Signs of Summer
Size: F6 (31.8 × 41 cm)
¥99,000 (tax included)
Mixed media (watercolor and pastel)
Southwest France: The Midi Canal
A luxurious river cruise on the Hotel Badge. A couple leisurely rides along a row of plane trees on bicycles they brought from the ship. Carried along by this time free from the daily grind, they eventually return to their routine. These memories will surely nourish them in the days to come. I painted this while reflecting on such thoughts. I captured the refreshing air and soft shadows of the approaching summer using transparent watercolors. I depicted the sunlight filtering through the trees with pastels.

Path of Dreams
Size: F6 (41 × 31.8 cm)
¥132,000 (tax included)
Watercolor on canvas
Mixed media (watercolor and pastel)
In the twilight between sleep and wakefulness, at the moment when past and future, reality and fantasy blend together, dreams arrive on the breeze, leaving behind a sweet scent before blowing past once more.
Using watercolor canvas, I repeatedly painted with watercolors and washed them away, then applied pastels and smudged them, to depict a dense, languid flow of air and a scene bathed in hazy light.

The Temple of Hydrangeas
Size: F6 (41 × 31.8 cm)
¥132,000 (tax included)
Watercolor on canvas
Mixed media (watercolor and pastel)
Meigetsu-in Temple, Kitakamakura
The hydrangea temple in the early morning. Just as the rain had stopped and the first rays of the new day began to shine.
I sought to capture the passage of time that lingers in this ancient temple by making the most of the texture of the watercolor canvas.
After using transparent watercolors to depict the humid atmosphere of the rainy season, I applied pastels to capture the appearance of the flower clusters glistening in the early morning sunlight.

Snowy
Size: SM (22.7 × 15.8 cm)
¥33,000 (tax included)
Oil on canvas
This series is inspired by the innocent eyes of kittens.
Eyes brimming with curiosity, eyes that seem a little vulnerable—short-haired, long-haired, and all kinds of fluffy little ones.
I’ve depicted these fragile, vulnerable, yet warm and resilient lives set against a natural backdrop, alongside seasonal flowers.
