Katsuya Shibata

Born 1958 in Katsushika Ward, Tokyo

1985 Graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts, Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Crafts

1987 Completed Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts, Lacquer Art Specialization (Yoshinori Taguchi Laboratory)

After working at the Mishima Town Living Crafts Center in Fukushima Prefecture (1987–1990), began his artistic practice.

Held numerous solo and group exhibitions primarily in Tokyo and Kyoto, including at Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi.

Also creates wall reliefs and monuments for public facilities.

2006 Established “Komuma Studio” in Toride City, Ibaraki Prefecture.

Published “Techniques of Lacquer” in 2012 and “Techniques of Lacquer: Applied Edition” in 2016 (Abe Publishing).

Held solo exhibitions in various locations from 2013 to 2025.

Currently a craft artist.

Part-time lecturer at Musashino Art University; instructor at the Hanyo Lacquer Craft Studio; instructor at Ibaraki Prefectural Toride Shoyo High School.
